Everyone involved in education must be aware of their responsibilities and the role they can play in protecting students. This Safeguarding Children in Education course will teach students how to recognise when abuse or neglect is occurring in a student and how to respond appropriately to concerns.
Throughout the training, participants will gain an understanding of the general indicators of various types of abuse and neglect, including those more relevant to an educational setting, such as bullying, grooming, and the Prevent duty. Learners will also gain an understanding of the various roles and responsibilities of principals, governing bodies, and the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
The course’s objectives
- By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Recognize their individual responsibilities for the protection of students of all ages, including those over the age of 18.
- Recognize the responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead and the Headteacher.
- Be aware of the general signs that suggest physical, emotional, or sexual abuse or neglect is occurring.
- Know the different types of abuse that can occur in an educational setting and how to spot them, such as radicalization and extremism, FGM, forced marriage, modern slavery, child sexual exploitation, child trafficking, peer-on-peer abuse, bullying, self-harm and self-neglect.
- Understand how to respond appropriately when abuse or neglect is disclosed.
- Be aware of the significance of maintaining records, maintaining confidentiality, and reporting concerns to the appropriate people.

3 | Recognizing Abuse and Neglect | Where does abuse take place? Signs of abuse in a student, general indicators, physical abuse (bruising, bite marks, burns, and scalds, fractures, scars), recognizing emotional abuse, recognizing sexual abuse and recognizing neglect. |
4 | Types of Abuse and Neglect | Radicalization, extremism, and terrorism, Prevent, reporting concerns, Prevent guidance, female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage and modern slavery. |
5 | Further Types of Abuse and Neglect | Child sexual exploitation (CSE), child criminal exploitation (including county lines), grooming, online abuse, child trafficking, harmful sexual behavior, peer on peer abuse, cybercrime, bullying and cyberbullying, domestic abuse, self-harm and self-neglect, other issues, children with additional vulnerabilities. |
