OSHA stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1994
Because the FMA 1967, which is responsible for factory control, only applies to manufacturing, mining, quarrying, and construction, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was established in 1994 in response to this limitation. The FMA 1967 only applies to 24% of the nation’s total workforce, whereas OSHA 1994 applies to 90% of the nation’s total workforce. This disparity is due to the fact that the FMA 1967 only went into effect in 1967.
The following are the goals of OSHA 1994:
a) To protect the safety, health, and welfare of people who are working against any dangers to their health or safety that may be caused by the activities of people who are working;
b) To protect people at a place of work, other than the people working there, from potential dangers to their safety or health that are caused by the activities of the people working there;
c) To foster, for people who are employed, a working environment that is tailored to the specific physiological and psychological requirements of those individuals;
d) To provide the means whereby the associated occupational safety and health legislations may be gradually replaced by a system of regulations and approved industry codes of practise operating in combination with the provisions of this Act, which are designed to maintain or improve the standards of safety and health in the workplace.
The Ministry of Human Resources is in charge of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (“DOSH”). This department is in charge of making sure people are safe, healthy, and happy at work, as well as protecting others from safety and health risks in the industries listed in the First Schedule of OSHA 1994, which includes:
It would appear that whenever we bring up the topic of workplace safety in modern times, yells of “it’s health and safety gone nuts!” are never far behind. It is all too common for discussions on the subject to centre on situations in which rules are at best seen as ridiculous and at worst seen as lacking any common sense. Examples of these situations include outlawing running on playgrounds and prohibiting the wearing of flip-flops in the workplace. It is easy to lose sight of the reasons why health and safety training is vital in the first place when there is so much controversy and disagreement surrounding the topic.
